Gears of War is a military science fiction third-person shooter video game developed by Epic Games and published by Microsoft Game Studios. It was initially released exclusively for Xbox 360 in November 2006, then was re-released for PC the following year. The game takes place on the fictional planet of Sera, and focuses on the troops of Delta Squad as they fight a seemingly unstoppable subterranean enemy known as the Locust Horde. The game features the use of cover and strategic fire for the player to advance through scenarios. The option to play cooperatively through the campaign is available. The game also features multiple online game modes for up to eight players.
The game was a commercial and critical success, selling over three million copies in its first ten weeks. It is currently the 5th best-selling Xbox 360 game of all-time. It received critical acclaim from critics, and won several "Game of the Year" awards for 2006.
